4. CARVE SONGBIRD SPECIES LIFE-SIZE
5. BE TRUE TO THE ANATOMY AND COLORATION OF EACH BIRD OR ANIMAL
6. CARVE EACH BIRD OR ANIMAL FROM A SINGLE BLOCK OF WOOD
7. CARVE ALL PARTS OF THE BIRD OR ANIMAL IN PLACE; DO NOT GLUE PARTS ON
8. USE AS LIMITED A PALETTE AS POSSIBLE
9. PAINT THE CARVINGS BY HAND, WITH BRUSHES
10. PAINT ALL SURFACES OF THE CARVING: LEAVE NO BARE WOOD
11. ALWAYS DO MY BEST, AND ALWAYS SEEK TO IMPROVE
FOR POCKETKNIFE CARVINGS . . .
12. USE PRIMARILY A BUCK 307 JACKKNIFE AND A WARREN KNIFE WITH A CONVEX BLADE
13. CARVE CLEANLY, WITH A NOTICEABLE ABSENCE OF SLIVERS AND WOOD FIBERS
14. USE NO SANDPAPER
15. WORK ON EVERY SURFACE OF THE CARVING; LEAVE NO 'RAW' OR BAND-SAW MARKS
16. CAPTURE SOME SERENDIPITY, IF POSSIBLE, IN THE NATURAL RESULT OF THE KNIFE CUTS AND BRUSH STROKES
